THE SONNETS OF PETRARCH Translated by Joseph Auslander Longmans, Green & Co., New York, 1932 DURING THE LIFE OF LAURA I. Wherein Petrarch confesses his folly O ye that hear in vagrant rhymes the sighing On which the headlong heart of youth went feeding, When, still unseasoned, still at folly's leading I turned from fears in sudden tenor flying The earliest major practitioner of the sonnet, Petrarch is credited with the development and popularization of the Italian sonnet, thus called the Petrarchan sonnet. In 1333, Petrarch connected with fellow Italian poet Giovanni Boccaccio, with whom he engaged in regular correspondence, including an exchange of their writing. Francesco Petrarca, född 20 juli 1304 i Arezzo, Italien, död 19 juli 1374 i Arquà (som sedan 1870 heter Arquà Petrarca), var en stilbildande lyriker på italienska språket och historieskrivare. Tillsammans med Dante Alighieri och Giovanni Boccaccio ses han som en av de viktigaste företrädarna för den tidiga italienska litteraturen .

Petrarch hopes his sonnets would meet sympathy and compassion. He hopes to awaken in readers the very same feelings, which he is himself ashamed of now. Petrarch in his Sonnets is looking at his feelings of love analyzing it from the side, for now, years later, he "is not the same kind of who he used to be." Below is an example of a well-known sonnet by Petrarch (translated by Thomas Wentworth Higginson) and a familiar sonnet by Shakespeare for comparison. It’s clear from the examples that both poems feature 14 lines addressing the theme of love, yet they have differing rhyme schemes and artistic expressions.
